Oil Cleansing Instructions

If you are new to oil cleansing, it may take a couple of tries to figure out what blend of oils works best for you. Personally, I use a mix that is 3/4 olive oil, 1/4 castor oil. I also add I drop each of lavender and frankincense oils for healing, rejuvenation and restoration and it is perfect for my skin. Other articles recommend these ratios:

• Oily Skin: 1/3 Castor Oil or Hazelnut Oil and 2/3 Olive, Sunflower or other oil

• Combination Skin: 1/4 Castor or Hazelnut Oil and 3/4 Olive, Sunflower or other oil

• Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like olive oil, or a very small amount of Castor/ Hazelnut Oil added to the nourishing oils.

To find out the best blend for you, I recommend starting with the suggested amounts above for your skin type and adjusting if needed. When I started, I mixed up very small batches (1teaspoon castor oil to 2 teaspoons olive oil, etc) until I figured out the right blend for me. I’ve also found that even pure coconut oil works great once skin has adjusted, though it can be drying on some skin types.

Essential oils you can add to any of the above:

• Roman Chamomile oil – for calming irritated, red, or inflamed skin

• Lavender essential oil – skin balance, calming, discoloration,

• Lemon essential oil – for vitamin c, oil reducer, anti-inflammatory (night)

• Calendula oil – healing and soothing for irritated or inflamed skin

The following are antimicrobial and will help clean up acne/clear pores. They are also strong and should be used sparingly well diluted in a carrier oil or mask and only on occasion.

• Tea tree oil – antimicrobial, can be drying

• Frankincense oil – ultimate antiaging oil, hormonally balancing, antimicrobial

• Peppermint oil – toning and antimicrobial, can be drying

Homemade Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and essential oils.

Prep Time 20 minutes

Servings 1 cup

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter if using, in a double boiler or a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.

  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.

  • When all ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil if using and any essential oils or scents like vanilla.

  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. Note: This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

  • Use as you would regular lotion. This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes since all ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added. Use within 6 months for best moisturizing benefits.

Notes

A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and is also great for diaper rash on baby, for eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
